Dr. Engel

J. Mark Engel M.D. received his subspecialty training in pediatric ophthalmology at Northwestern University and The Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Engel is Board Certified in Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a full member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. Dr. Engel is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Departments of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Dr. Engel serves as the Chief, Section of Pediatric Ophthalmology, at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He is the Chief of Pediatric Ophthalmology at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and at St. Peter’s University Hospital.

For his his teaching excellence, Dr. Engel received the Ruth Steinman pediatric teaching award two times and the volunteer teacher of the year award three times. He annually helps children abroad in his work with the international organization Healing the Children.

Dr. Engel has authorized papers in leading ophthalmic journals, and has presented his work at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS). He is the co-author of a chapter on strabismus in a leading textbook for ophthalmologists and ophthalmologists-in-training.

Interesting Facts

Dr. Engel’s first foreign trip was to Madrid, Spain, to visit the family of his wife. Since that time, Dr. Engel has visited over 25 countries, including medical trips to Thailand, South Africa and 16 trips with Healing the Children to Latin American countries.

Dr. Engel is a tennis nut.

Dr. Engel's oldest son, Alex is at NYU, and his younger son, Michael, is in his sophomore year at Princeton High School. His wife teaches Spanish and the College of New Jersey, and tries to teach Dr. Engel Spanish at home.
