The retina is not completely developed in infants born more than six weeks premature. The premature infant needs to be examined by a retinal or pediatric ophthalmologist at regular intervals to ensure that the retina is developing normally. Occasionally, a laser procedure will be recommended to prevent retinal detachment.

Once the retina has fully developed, the infant is no longer at risk for retinal detachments. However, the premature infant is still at higher risk for developing amblyopia, strabismus, or the need for glasses, and should be followed through early childhood by an eye specialist.
