About Dr. Engel

J. Mark Engel M.D. received his subspecialty training in pediatric ophthalmology at Northwestern University and The Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Engel is Board Certified in Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a full member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. Dr. Engel is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Departments of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Dr. Engel serves as the Chief, Section of Pediatric Ophthalmology, at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He is the Chief of Pediatric Ophthalmology at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and at St. Peter’s University Hospital.

For his teaching excellence, the pediatric residents at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School have awarded Dr. Engel the Ruth Ellen Steinman, M.D. Pediatric Teaching Attending of the Year award in 1996 and 1997. He annually helps children abroad in his work with the international organization Healing the Children.

Dr. Engel has authorized papers in leading ophthalmic journals, and has presented his work at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS). He is the co-author of a chapter on strabismus in a leading textbook for ophthalmologists and ophthalmologists-in-training.

Dr. Engel enjoys spending time with his 12 and 15-year-old sons. He also enjoys being in nature, traveling, bicycling, and practicing his Spanish.
