UCEC Leads Healing The Children Trip To Bolivia

Dr. J. Mark Engel once again led a pediatric ophthalmology trip to Latin America, this time to Anzaldo, Bolivia.  Working intensely for a week in a rural hospital serving a Quechua area, the Healing the Children team of ophthalmologists, anesthesiologists, operating room and recovery room nurses and administrative personnel operated on 59 children who otherwise would not have access to needed surgery.  Working closely with the Fundación Oftalmológica Boliviana, we also taught Bolivian doctors techniques in strabismus and ptosis surgery.

Healing the Children is a non-profit non-denominational organization in the U.S. whose mission is to obtain medical care for children who do not have access to care.  The international program organizes several medical trips yearly.  HTC provides all of the necessary equipment and supplies for these surgeries.  In addition to donating their services far away from home, team members fund their own travel expenses.

Since Dr. Engel began volunteering in 1997, he has been on ten trips to Ecuador, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Bolivia.  His wife Isabel Kentengian has been the Trip Administrator on six HTC trips to Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Thailand and Bolivia.

Healing the Children is able to help thousands of children each year on a very modest budget because of the large hearts of our donors and volunteers.  To find out more about our regional chapter of Healing the Children call 973-38-7114 or click here:  http://www.users.nac.net/htcmid/
