Pediatric Ophthalmic Surgery

First and foremost, Dr. Engel, Dr. Rousta, and Dr. Han are conservative with their treatment.  In general, a surgical option is only considered if it offers a clear benefit over conservative treatment, and after the child has been observed over a period of time, indicating the need for a surgical procedure.

As the major referral center for pediatric ophthalmic disorders in the area, our doctors are experienced in caring for a large spectrum of pediatric eye disorders, from more common disorders to complex disorders which are referred from outlying hospitals.  They bring this experience along with their background and continued involvement in the refinement of the latest surgical techniques to give your child the best surgical outcome.

Most surgeries are performed at St. Peter’s University Hospital CARES outpatient center or at Robert Wood Johnson University Children’s Same Day Surgery.  Dr. Han also performs surgery at the Medical Center of Princeton. All of these facilities are staffed with fellowship trained pediatric anesthesiologists, and are dedicated to giving your child the safest and most pleasant experience possible.

Almost all pediatric eye surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, which does not involve an overnight stay.  In general, minimally invasive techniques are used, which allows the child to recover quickly and be at full activity level as soon as possible.

Please refer to the "eye conditions" section for information regarding some of the more common conditions which may necessitate surgical intervention.
