When Is My Child Ready for Contact Lenses?

Many parents wonder at what age their child should start wearing contact lenses. While it varies from one kid to the next, most children are ready around age 12 or older, once they are capable of handling the responsibility of lens care and application.

Modern contact lenses are comfortable, safe, and designed to meet individual eye needs. The process begins with a dedicated fitting appointment, where we select the right lenses and teach your child how to insert, remove, and care for them properly. Follow-up visits are key to ensure the lenses continue to fit well as your child's eyes grow and change.

If you’re considering contacts for your child, feel free to schedule a consultation with us! Our team is here to guide you and ensure the best eye health for your child.

Understanding Refractive Errors:

Helping Your Child See Clearly

If your child is having difficulty seeing properly, it may be due to several common conditions collectively referred to as refractive errors. These occur when the eye doesn’t focus light properly on the retina at the back of the eye.

The main types include:

  • Nearsightedness (Myopia): Distant objects appear blurry. Glasses or contacts can often help your child see clearly from afar.

  • Farsightedness (Hyperopia): Near objects are blurry, and sometimes distant objects too. Corrective lenses can reduce eye strain and improve vision.

  • Astigmatism: Vision is blurry or distorted at all distances due to an irregular eye shape. Glasses or contact lenses can correct this.

Moral of the story: early detection with a simple eye exam can help determine the best solution. Timely correction can greatly improve your child’s comfort, confidence, and ability to enjoy themselves outdoors during this beautiful time of year.
